Preparing for your house move

If you decide to do the packing yourself, we are able to provide all the materials needed (costs may be incurred). However please bear in mind that we will not be liable for any items damaged if packed poorly. You wouldn’t expect plates, glasses or fine china to survive transit if they were just placed in a box with no protection.

If agreed in writing, Hodgsons Removals will usually;
• Pack Televisions/Monitors. We have specialist, handmade bags to protect these during transit.

• Pack Large Pictures/Mirrors. As above, our industry has been around for hundreds of years
and as such, we have created really useful ways of assisting clients with the most awkward, difficult aspects of packing.

• Pack Hanging Clothes using Wardrobe Boxes. These are specialist boxes and enable our
teams to pack hanging clothes onto a rail for safe transit. These will usually be unpacked at
your new home and retrieved for use the following day. These boxes are great and enable
clients to transport hanging clothes without stuffing them into suitcases/bags ready for moving.

• Leave the contents of drawers in situ if there is nothing delicate or breakable. This applies
to chest of drawers, bedside tables and blanket boxes. We would ask for a common-sense
approach and would expect heavy or breakable items to be removed and packed separately.
Please note that we will not move divan bed base drawers full and we would ask that you
pack these into a separate container ready for moving.

What we expect from you (The Customer)
• To use good quality packing boxes. We can provide these or you can source your own.
Finding any old boxes, you can lay your hands on creates difficulties for our teams when
loading vehicles. Look for double or triple wall boxes, these are strong and offer greater
protection for your possessions whilst in transit. Banana & Food boxes maybe free from
supermarkets but they’re no good to a removal team
• Seal all boxes flat so that our team can utilise them. Overfilled or underfilled boxes are a
nightmare and simply increase the time taken to perform the removal.
• If it can break, put it in a box. Just imagine when you first bought or were given the item,
there’s a strong chance it came in a box and as such, it needs to leave the home in the same
way.
• Good quality Bin-Liners or vacuum packs are useful, especially for softer items. Do not be
averse to using them but please do not fill them full of breakable items.

Kitchen;
1. Pack appliances into boxes – Handing your removal team an individual item increases the
time taken to perform the removal. That is one trip wasted between the vehicle and the home.
We will move microwaves as they are.
2. Use plenty of bubble wrap/paper to pack your delicate items. Plates/Cups should be
packed stood on their end, rather than flat. This is their strongest point and will protect them
from being broken in transit.
3. Make sure you set aside important items like medicines, baby related equipment and thekettle!
4. Run down the contents of the fridge/freezer up until moving day. If you still have some
food stuffs, try utilising freezer bags or a cool box and take this in your car.

Living Room/Dining Room;
• If agreed in writing, leave any extra-large pictures/mirrors to us. Individually bubble wrap
any others and place them into a suitable box. Try stand them on their end rather than laying
them flat as this will increase the risk of breakages.
• Leave the television to us but pack any speakers, DVD players, set top boxes ready for transit.
• If you are bringing your curtains, feel free to fold these up and place them in a good quality bin-liner or such like.
• Lamps. Remove the shade and bubble wrap the shade and lamp separately. These items are
very fragile and need to be packed separately.
• Please pack sofa and dining chair cushions into suitable bags or boxes ready for moving.
• Empty the contents of the sideboard. Sideboards are usually very heavy items of furniture
and leaving these full can create difficulties for our teams.

Bedrooms:
1. Pack bedding/pillows into suitable bags or boxes.
2. Utilise suitcases/holdalls for any loose clothing, towels, linen or towels. These have to be
moved anyway so we might as well utilise the space. You can also do the same with washbaskets.
3. Prepare curtains, lamps and light fittings as detailed in the reception areas.
4. If agreed in writing, leave your hanging clothes to us. We will bring wardrobe boxes and
our team will pack these on the day of the move.
5. Empty the contents of divan drawers. These are not secure drawer units and once lifted, the
contents inside will simply fall out. 6. Leave the contents of chest of drawers, bedside tables,
blanket boxes, trunks in situ. If there is nothing delicate or heavy.

Lofts;
1. Make sure the contents of the loft are emptied prior to our team’s arrival.
2. The packing quality of most lofts is difficult. Out of sight, out of mind is a common term
for most loft spaces. Although we will endeavour to move these items, please try re-
organising the contents into suitable containers.

Garage:
1. We cannot move paint, oil, gas or any other flammable items. If you intend to move any
such items, please ensure these are moved in your car.
2. Try bundle garden tools together using string or tape to create one package. This will save
our teams trying to struggle with numerous different tools.
3. If the item can fit in a box, put it in a box. Garages can be cluttered areas and if we try
remove individual items, this will increase the time taken to perform the removal. Do not be
overly concerned about the weight of individual boxes as we will utilise trollies to shuttle the
contents between the garage and our vehicle.

Garden:
1. Pack any small ornaments, lights and toys into suitable containers. If it’s delicate, make
sure you use bubble wrap.
2. Try box/crate any smaller plant pots into a container and leave larger ones to our team. By
crating the smaller ones, this saves a lot of time and effort for our removal crews.

Moving day

The removal team arrives between 8.30 - 9.00 am, so hopefully you have left the kettle out to make yourself a quick cuppa. Then simply sit back, relax and let Hodgson's Removals do all the work.
As soon as you get the call saying you can pick up the keys for your new house, inform the removal team and you’re nearly there.

Once the unloading begins the removal team will place your boxes and furniture into the rooms of your choice. If an item of furniture is in the wrong room please ask a member of the removal team to move it to the correct one, this is after all, what you’re paying for. However please remember these guys are removal men not interior designers, so try to have a good idea of what goes where from the start.
